August

August is one of those fun words (for those like me). It’s a month, but also variations of grand & regal & lofty. As a month, it’s a signal that summer break is nearly over, and the season for getting back to work & classroom learning is about to begin. For farmers, the fruits (or crops) of their labors are soon ready for harvest & market. They might get a break in a few more months if they don’t have to milk cows in the snow at 5 am.

At present, mid-August, I’m hoping to finish a special quilt & move on to other projects. They include swing covers, job applications, and a new non-profit dedicated to building biblical resources in ASL. No, not translations – there are bigger & better groups handling that. What we don’t have is a clear video-based place for independently learning & applying the tales of David, Esther, Moses, Ruth, and so on. These spark interest in digging into scripture a bit deeper, such as how God works behind the scenes. He still does, and not all miracles are as visible as the Red Sea. Several of us are interested in building multiple-choice quizzes in ASL, and the next step is establishing a non-profit with a plan, budget, and donation path with accountability.

August also marks another month with too few updates. Ok, almost no updates. The app that allows website writing at random times & places recently became functional again. If it had been working sooner, I might have told you about tearing a quilt in half & starting over. I might have quipped about life at home with a character who resembles an anorexic Italian grandma (stereotypes intended). I’m sure I would have told you about the VBS with several grandma guests, a few missionary kids, & a couple from the church’s neighborhood. I might have mentioned attending camp meeting in Logan & the joy of seeing some familiar faces, including the interpreter who encouraged me decades ago.

Much has happened, and much time has been spent focusing on parent-care. A current catch-phrase is, “If you know, you know.” Alz – ’nuff said.

Parent health is still on a roller coaster, each one having spurts of racing ahead or falling behind. At present, mom’s status quo, but doctors want to follow up on belly-organ issues that marked last Aug-Nov. Dad’s system is acting up again. He’s currently on a bland diet – which for a pepper-belly like him is no fun at all. Worse, tomatoes are ready for picking & eating every day.

I’ve recently met with my new primary care doctor. She replaced my 2 daily insulin shots with a small pill, which might be working a bit too well. A lowering of other meds might be in order. The next visit is in a few weeks.

For those who have asked, medical stuff is all on me unless it’s a catastrophic thing like stroke-related hospital visits or cataract surgery. Those have been fully covered (thankfully). When I looked into public offerings, they insisted I approve of them accessing my parents’ assets. Um, no. That has put an unhealthy dent in my rating & accounts in the past 18 months. I’m still upright & fatigue is a thing, so I’m a bit less communicative than I prefer.

By reading again, you’ll find prayer requests. Add to them the variety of things not mentioned, such as a preemie, some life struggles, a few losses,  more that I’ve learned from friends, and certainly politics & society.

In all this, we know that Jesus isn’t surprised, and I (for one) am well taken care of.
